Gem-in-a-Box is the cost-efficient kit for world-wide eutrophication monitoring that has been developed under the Global Eutrophication Monitoring initiative, established by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, in collaboration with The Ocean Foundation and Commonwealth Blue Charter. The goal for the kits is to reduce costs and training required for monitoring and to increase data collection in remote and under-resourced areas, which will help to create standardized global-scale datasets. These datasets will address SDG 14.1.1. which calls for increased monitoring and mitigation planning to reduce nutrient pollution in coastal ecosystems.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada has received funding from Commonwealth Blue Charter to administer a training camp that will bring participants primarily from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to learn to use the kits.
